Instructions:

For this assignment, grab some popcorn and a soda and analyze a movie using your new found ethical knowledge. Please watch Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened (available on Netflix*) or Fyre Fraud (available on Hulu).

**If you do not have access to Netflix or Hulu, see below.**

After viewing the film, prepare a short paper (roughly 300 words) and relate excerpts of the film to an ethics theory, concept, or perspective as presented in the course materials. Some things to consider (You DO NOT have to do all of these; this is just a suggestion):

  • Who were the stakeholders for each major ethical choice made in the film? [A stakeholder is a person or an animal who is affected, directly or indirectly, by a decision made by another person.]
  • There were many people whose ethical choices contributed to the outcome shown in the film. For each major character describe how they complied with or violated ethical principles and describe how the outcome would have changed had they acted differently.
  • Analyze the actions of any major character in the movie.
  • The plots of most films turn on one or more ethical choices which must be made by the characters in the movie. Tell us what ethical decisions altered the plot of the movie.
  • To be clear, this is not just a summary or “data dump”. Analyze the situation and think through it with the lens of ethics you’ve learned over the semester. Why are the characters’ actions unethical (as opposed to wrong or right).

*Please note: if you watch the Netflix version of the documentary, there is a part about halfway through the film where Andy starts talking about how he was asked to get the water. This part contains language that you might find offensive. Please forward through this part of the film.

**Both of these films contain language and scantily clad people. If this is something that’s not your thing, please watch any film you wish that contains an ethical issue. You are not required to watch the Fyre festival documentaries, but you must watch a movie and contend with the ethics of the situation portrayed in that movie. Good Sam on Netflix is a nice rom-com that deals with an ethical situation.
